The couple that hosts gets to pick the theme and is responsible for assigning the remaining couples a dish to bring. Usually we are given a category like salad, vegetable or dessert and we may pick any recipe we like. I thought I would shake things up a bit and have a throw-back soiree!<br />
<br />
Daddy-o and I elected the theme "Kitschtastic Awesomeness" with the main course being Thai Tiki Turkey Meatloaf. The 4 other couples were each assigned one of the following: appetizer, gelatin, vegetable and dessert. They were then instructed to visit <a href="http://www.midcenturymenu.com/" target="_blank">Mid Century Menu</a> or <a href="http://www.charlesphoenix.com/category/test-kitchen/" target="_blank">The Charles Phoenix Test Kitchen</a> and pick a recipe from one of the sites that fell into their respective categories. Of course, all of the guests were made aware that any dish could be a gelatin dish even if they were not expressly assigned gelatin. The more Jello the merrier, right?!<br />
<br />
When all was said and done we ended up with BBQ meatballs, celery with pimento cheese spread, an astro-weenie pineapple, meatloaf, potato salad jello, pineapple carrot jello ring, green bean casserole and pistachio pudding crisp dessert. It was, well...kitschtastic awesomeness at it's best! Even if it felt a bit like a church social.<br />

<strong><u>Thai Turkey Tiki Meatloaf</u> </strong><br />
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>(</strong>adapted from Weight Watchers Hawaiian Turkey Loaf)</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3 Tbsp Orange Juice</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5 Tbsp Fish Sauce</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 tsp Red Curry Paste</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 tsp chopped Garlic</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 Red Pepper, chopped</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/2 Onion, chopped</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6 slices fresh Ginger (quarter sized)</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
38 ounces ground Turkey</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 cup breadcrumbs</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 eggs</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong><u>Pineapple Chutney</u></strong></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8 ounces crushed Pineapple</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 Tbsp Sugar</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 Tbsp White Vinegar</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 Tbsp chopped Onions</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 Tbsp Red Pepper, chopped</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 Tbsp minced Ginger</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 Tbsp Cilantro </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Directions: Preheat oven to 350F. In a food processor or blender, combine juice, fish sauce, curry paste, garlic, red pepper, onions and ginger. Process until it is a fine puree. Pour puree into a large bowl and add turkey, breadcrumbs and egg. Blend everything well with your hands, put into a loaf pan that has been coated with non-stick spray. Now get creative and make the finest looking tiki head you can. Br sure to make spaces for cherry eyes! Bake for 45-60 min using a meat thermometer until the center reaches 164F. Remove from oven and don't panic...there will be a collection of oogoo in the eye sockets and mouth of your tiki. Simply use a spoon to skim this off. Let the meatloaf stand for 5-10 minutes before removing from pan. After placing on platter, add cherries and pineapple to give your tiki some pizazz.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the pineapple topping: (while meatloaf is cooking) </div>
In a microwave safe bowl, combine pineapple, sugar, vinegar, onions, red pepper, ginger and pepper flakes. Microwave on high 3-5 minutes. Let stand in microwave for another minute or two. Add cilantro and serve over top or alongside the meatloaf.<br />

I don't know why. Perhaps it's because I don't ever remember having one when I was growing up, or because they always seem to be such an elegant addition to a cocktail party, or maybe because they utilize vertical space thus preserving precious table space on your buffet. Whenever I see a tidbit tray (TBT) at a thrift shop I have a hard time passing them up but, really, how many of these marvels of snack service does a gal need?<br />
<br />
As fate would have it, I was cruising one of my local haunts and spotted a new-in-box TBT setting upon the shelf. At only $1, I had zero chance of resisting. As I pick it up I had a thought...why not change it up a bit? Records! Since I have boxes of albums (33's and 78's) this would be easy. I knew that I wanted to have graduated sizes for each level so I went on the hunt for a 45 to be the smallest top tier. I'm sure it's been done before but it was quick, easy and oh so cute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbQE9ZK6lUss57jRb5a-h-DfWSWktdAe07CoRBj67KIMr8gwSwRWMgBSnHjfPONfZ3jbm6mjIMNyDqB0pRJbDrS0NAYMrmnVN047c2aB0TVUVnMSWILTM9_mJL8FJXpAqDHchPzytdBbY/s1600/tidbit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="368" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbQE9ZK6lUss57jRb5a-h-DfWSWktdAe07CoRBj67KIMr8gwSwRWMgBSnHjfPONfZ3jbm6mjIMNyDqB0pRJbDrS0NAYMrmnVN047c2aB0TVUVnMSWILTM9_mJL8FJXpAqDHchPzytdBbY/s400/tidbit.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTPY6R-q_IaBQfx92rmLXvCGWBkE-OFmP4dGro_B3zo4VstAi6glNoTLbgOfQq_t6j_Ip_kp1rePE4ozCNdXRfqdUDBsZD4cEYPxnz_Q9GUMguh-z9Jk3wJgiAmqHxk9S3sD3WNDoIlXg/s1600/supplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTPY6R-q_IaBQfx92rmLXvCGWBkE-OFmP4dGro_B3zo4VstAi6glNoTLbgOfQq_t6j_Ip_kp1rePE4ozCNdXRfqdUDBsZD4cEYPxnz_Q9GUMguh-z9Jk3wJgiAmqHxk9S3sD3WNDoIlXg/s640/supplies.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My original plan was to use a 33 for the bottom level, a 78 for the middle and a 45 for the top. Unfortunately this tidbit did not come with a base and I felt that just having an album in the bottom with no foot to sit upon would just be too unfinished for my taste. Maybe, just maybe, I would be able to use another 78 for the base and set it inside the lip of the actual tray.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8DYilflwHoTI0GikP11gkoMRY_D7pWqlMr56P_u3qyuPMXya_8GJJ3NgtoPdpaJzlPq73khlASDBLuNXCCBe4IujFiBG_C5GbFMPDbeBHFrXQIZGxh3aGUkpiZ_b0FFzFvklaXk_QDRg/s1600/bottom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8DYilflwHoTI0GikP11gkoMRY_D7pWqlMr56P_u3qyuPMXya_8GJJ3NgtoPdpaJzlPq73khlASDBLuNXCCBe4IujFiBG_C5GbFMPDbeBHFrXQIZGxh3aGUkpiZ_b0FFzFvklaXk_QDRg/s400/bottom.jpg" width="336" /></a>Shazam! That worked brilliantly!</div>
The next issue to conquer was that of the large center hole in the 45. How would I fill that? Just then I spotted a compact 33 in the vinyl bin. It's the same outer diameter of a 45 but with the same center post size as the other albums.<br />
<br />
Now with all of the kinks worked out, it's just a matter of assembling it all.. The bottom screw connected to the lower rod, the lower rod connected to the center rod...Sing it with me...center rod connected to the top loop....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Last week I participated in the Tour de Troit, a 30 mile non-competitive bicycle ride around Detroit. This is my third year doing the ride which just happened to fall on my 40th birthday. The ride raises awareness of biking as a mode of transportation; publicizes the growing greenways network in the City of Detroit and all of Southeastern Michigan; and raises funds for greenway development in Detroit, including the Southwest Detroit Greenlink.<br />
<br />
Although the ride is non-competitive, there tends to be an abundance of spandex toxicity; that is, folks who seem to take the ride far too seriously. In an effort to combat said spandex toxicity my friends and I have formed Team Lounge Leopards. We wear uniforms in my favorite shade of leopard and pipe tunes from the basket of my bike by the likes of Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. We have also been known to carry a case of PBR in a cooler on Daddy-o's bike. Must stay hydrated you know!<br />
<br />
Since the ride was part of my 40th Birthday Celebration Extravaganza, I felt the need to accessorize my bike helmet more so than the usual flower clip that I normally wear. In a rare stoke of genius, I came up with an idea so grand it would make headlines all over the state. Behold...<br />

The Tour starts at the Michigan Central Station. This was once the main passenger rail hub of Detroit. Since the last train rolled out in 1988 the building has come to symbolize the blight that has plagued the city. The tour winds it's way around the city through Corktown, the university district, the old Packard Plant, Indian Village and Belle Isle. Some parts of the city are so run down while other areas are a shining jewel of what once was. I often think about what the city was like in it's heyday. How families were once so proud of the beautiful homes they worked so hard to build. The same homes that remain abandoned burned-out shells of their former glory. </div>

The revival of Corktown is one of the success stories coming out of Detroit right now. This effort has been fueled by the growth of <a href="http://slowsbarbq.com/" target="_blank">Slows Bar B Q.</a> This block of Michigan Ave is a bustling hub which includes <a href="http://www.astrodetroit.com/" target="_blank">Astro Coffee</a> and <a href="http://vimeo.com/33992752" target="_blank">Sugar House.</a> We went out for some craft cocktails at Sugar House to celebrate my big four-oh. My favorite picture of my Auntie Hilda was taken during a Christmas celebration sometime in the 1950's. My Auntie looks beautiful and Uncle Earl is quite dapper but the star of the scene are those amazing curtains in the background. I really wanted to recreate that same feeling in my living room and dining area. After much searching, I was unable to find just the right curtains which meant I was going to have to make them myself.<br />
<br />
Let me start by saying I am NOT a seamstress. That being said, I was super excitied to find a detailed online tuorial on <a href="http://www.textile-love.com/" target="_blank">Textile Love</a>. So detailed in fact, that it was broken down into three seperate entries. They can be found starting <a href="http://www.textile-love.com/2012/01/diy-pinch-pleat-drapes-measuring-and.html" target="_blank">here.</a><br />
<br />
After determining the amount of fabric I needed I placed an order with <a href="http://www.barkclothhawaii.com/" target="_blank">Barkcloth Hawaii.</a> Nyna is great to work with and made sure I was happy with my order.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The instructions called for a blind hem down the sides of the curtain panels. I've never even switched out the foot on my sewing machine so this seemed like a daunting request. I was sure I would severly mess this up and ruin my fabric. I resorted to a strategy I almost never use...I read the instructions for my sewing machine. Let me tell you it was like some sort of voodoo. Everything worked like a charm and looked fantastic! </div>
<br />

My curtains are designed to soften the room. They don't close over the windows but hang at the edges of the windows. Privacy isn't an issue and the view is far too nice to obscure.<br />

As you may have gathered by now I have a severe lamp problem. Is it really a problem? I guess that depends on who you ask. Most folk would say "yes, it's time for an intervention". So, without further hesitation here is the haul from the last two days....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5q9p05UpZOQeZDAvem1KmI7bOtq5KIsGGB6sLNYbDFQbAKitePEnEvKaJbUu1INQtr1uvDEKKjUi6h4aM7c0c8OU5bAdw_DqazJqlAr7SfCFelWlj-W3UNnxvMc0r6jdn8LMeUnLEH70/s1600/lamp+trifecta.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5q9p05UpZOQeZDAvem1KmI7bOtq5KIsGGB6sLNYbDFQbAKitePEnEvKaJbUu1INQtr1uvDEKKjUi6h4aM7c0c8OU5bAdw_DqazJqlAr7SfCFelWlj-W3UNnxvMc0r6jdn8LMeUnLEH70/s400/lamp+trifecta.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first find is the gold TV lamp. This little gem was filthy when I found it yesterday at a garage sale. I LOVE that it has a built-in planter! I paid $1 for it and giggled when I saw that it is stamped '24K Gold' on the bottom. It cleaned up well, shining so bright now. I can't wait to get some fake greenery in it! I rewired the lamp but will need to tweak it a bit as the shade doesn't want to sit straight. I'm thinking a cardboard washer may do the trick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ1YIa8GwnaamIWXTPOL-rfEZA3Kg29gzP3E8yVCATA8Z8CvYWCRbY41rBpA1jrcnpxJw4SO7slH1FtKi-gdDVs5HC2YQAFExCjTWkjJ9MzBNjWzEm7-Bo6GAr6qQ2WLbsC076ovzrT38/s1600/lamp+gold.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ1YIa8GwnaamIWXTPOL-rfEZA3Kg29gzP3E8yVCATA8Z8CvYWCRbY41rBpA1jrcnpxJw4SO7slH1FtKi-gdDVs5HC2YQAFExCjTWkjJ9MzBNjWzEm7-Bo6GAr6qQ2WLbsC076ovzrT38/s400/lamp+gold.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lamp #2 was purchased this morning at the local American Legion Hall. They were having a rummage sale fundraiser for the veterans programs. I spotted it right when I walked in the door just sitting on the floor. I wasn't super in love with it, more of a strong like. It has jewels embedded in the porcelain base and I don't have any jeweled lamps yet. At $9 it was a little bit more then what I wanted to spend on it. However, it was raising funds for a good cause and this is where the problem comes in...I needed to 'save' it. Do I have room for it in my house? No. Did I already have a shade for it? Yes (I have a small pile of lamp shades laying around the house). So off I went with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

After some quality time with some #0000 steel wool and a can of gold spray paint it was looking pretty good. The black jeweled base sparkles after a good scrubbing. I rewired the lamp and added a vintage shade. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final lamp I actually picked up a few weeks ago at an estate sale in Minnesota. A beautiful little black cat lamp with a planter! I paid $5, which I thought was a steal. I added it to my little lamp rejuvenation party today giving it a good cleaning and new wiring. The shade was in my lonely shade collection. I've been looking for the perfect base for the pale pink venetian lamp shade. I think they look fantastic together! </div>

I don't make these too often, usually on special occasions or when we go camping. I like to make them the night before then reheat them when needed.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjib7_R9aiUi0iutLseQFYVBYRJPRlTjdFplweZe0vhCXKorb14fcCx3ob_j5KqsgX4F1PpKS8YhyphenhyphenR182OHPQxGVDaiCE5CWviHPErdev_XiO1nJ8hNLzxIvLkP5hCp9h5GHq-dTD-PTYU/s1600/ingredients.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><br />

<br />
Hard Boiled Eggs<br />
Breakfast Sausage<br />
Bread Crumbs<br />
<br />
<br />
First, hard boil the eggs. This may sound simple but for some reason, folks seem to have a hard time not overcooking the eggs. You know when you get a yoke with green on the outside? That's an overcooked egg.<br />
I have chickens in my garden so the first thing I have to do is wait for two weeks before I hard boil the eggs. Freshly laid eggs just wont hard boil nicely. They just don't solidify correctly.<br />
For perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs, place the eggs in a pot of cold water--enough to cover the eggs by one inch. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Boil for two minutes. Cover and remove from heat. Set a timer for 16 minutes. When the timer dings, rinse eggs with cold water. Let eggs cool then peel.<br />
<br />
Dry peeled eggs with a paper towel. Cut sausage into 1/2"-3/4" slices. Flatten sausage and wrap around egg being sure to cover all of the egg and seal the edges. I usually like to use Jimmy Dean Hot Breakfast Sausage. I've tried using local made sausage but found the fat content to be too high. The fat cooked off and left my eggs exposed. Gasp!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUG2I_CldWtMrtDuMkId4EZg3d-_9KBYVZOSCvmPBlx6eEzBy6O8xbCTd2EWOvP-t7dfMprPpxP8Ptu7W6JEjy4d_icPJ2ziQiHoav-EEStlBNp6gG4hlw5u0hHMlQ0nd9uUX4fsF2v8Q/s1600/egg+in+crumbs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUG2I_CldWtMrtDuMkId4EZg3d-_9KBYVZOSCvmPBlx6eEzBy6O8xbCTd2EWOvP-t7dfMprPpxP8Ptu7W6JEjy4d_icPJ2ziQiHoav-EEStlBNp6gG4hlw5u0hHMlQ0nd9uUX4fsF2v8Q/s1600/egg+in+crumbs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUG2I_CldWtMrtDuMkId4EZg3d-_9KBYVZOSCvmPBlx6eEzBy6O8xbCTd2EWOvP-t7dfMprPpxP8Ptu7W6JEjy4d_icPJ2ziQiHoav-EEStlBNp6gG4hlw5u0hHMlQ0nd9uUX4fsF2v8Q/s400/egg+in+crumbs.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Once the eggs are encased in sausage, roll them in bread crumbs. Most often you will see Scotch Eggs deep fried but I prefer them baked. Place the eggs on a cooling rack suspended above a cake baking pan. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Bake in an oven preheated to 325F for 35minutes. Serve with honey mustard for dipping. Delicious!<br />
<br />

As you all know, vintage lamps are my Achilles heel. This beauty depicts an Asian boy and girl on a boat. I originally wanted a red venetian lamp shade but was unable to find one at a price I was willing to pay. So it was time to get creative. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHigbOoDOwZ7ecvBfFllAJgNEiEENN8oNNzWWyxuqbND7xyIIE6JhaTCpoonVJ7or7fC2W2hhONFJqRjFXlQnQVvfAbi-ZC868sgjsPVUH86kJCVTBAhB0DKdHpNxyeAigNCwMN4d7ymk/s1600/shade+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHigbOoDOwZ7ecvBfFllAJgNEiEENN8oNNzWWyxuqbND7xyIIE6JhaTCpoonVJ7or7fC2W2hhONFJqRjFXlQnQVvfAbi-ZC868sgjsPVUH86kJCVTBAhB0DKdHpNxyeAigNCwMN4d7ymk/s400/shade+before.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
I hit the local Target store and picked up a rectangle shade that would compliment the lamp nicely. I think I paid about $12 for it. Nice shape but boring, boring, boring.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

I picked them up at a local antique shop last year. I love the colors and the pattern looks to be an oriental bonsai motif.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Step 1: Wash and iron fabric.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpq3XnsjauAItgtHAlDjZ1yu6Oo1zcc9U8DqHtMuvQdKAsyqJSxrSNt0egB2dq5qLxnHYBLvZYaw4fPmNVWWyLe0ToTu7zjwISJyW-M9Wao89nhcUDeeE8lL1MJkAl0f4WgDW9kb7VxFE/s1600/spray+adhesive.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpq3XnsjauAItgtHAlDjZ1yu6Oo1zcc9U8DqHtMuvQdKAsyqJSxrSNt0egB2dq5qLxnHYBLvZYaw4fPmNVWWyLe0ToTu7zjwISJyW-M9Wao89nhcUDeeE8lL1MJkAl0f4WgDW9kb7VxFE/s400/spray+adhesive.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Step 2: Cut fabric for each side of the shade. If using a drum shade you can cut one piece to cover the entire shade. If the top of the shade is tapered then your fabric will end up more of a 'C' shape. Step 3: Attach the fabric to the shade using spray adhesive. Follow the directions on the can.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This will give your shade a clean, finished look. I used a product called Liquid Stitch to secure the bias tape.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 5: Lastly, I added great chartreuse trim to cover the seams where the fabric meets at the corners of the shade. I used Liquid Stitch to attatch the trim.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEEi9DBhKgKHigxGQ-zov_S9r6R5NEtlD86N-gAqTHMfB5WUOIXC7QJgQeZrf-KiaKU75f3Bb-hJxr9QDrGaL0uYOaLbD-8p0ppp99HNu8N2EgIAICjiokXdjzqth2-I1roqzWgGZ-np8/s1600/Finished+dark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEEi9DBhKgKHigxGQ-zov_S9r6R5NEtlD86N-gAqTHMfB5WUOIXC7QJgQeZrf-KiaKU75f3Bb-hJxr9QDrGaL0uYOaLbD-8p0ppp99HNu8N2EgIAICjiokXdjzqth2-I1roqzWgGZ-np8/s400/Finished+dark.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So overall, I ended up spending about $25 for the shade and all of the fabric, trim, bias tape and adhesives. I think it turned quite stunning for a quick weekend project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These colorful cookies are so simple and perfect for Easter. Believe it or not, these tasty treats are made with Jello. The ones pictured below are Berry Blue and Cherry. Next week I think I will try Lime and Orange! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyZ_PpRuJQGxItEu1zbM5UrkxBQUd3XsnDLlAtFMYJ_8irTdnkUCGh3bQKlBGU4KBbRWmx367Um60IFnfOx2Sy9phMe2Fi46DfK0uIlBxlAlFm0vPfHbUoy-C1fCap8pkoRzGws7-eMfc/s1600/cookies+table.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyZ_PpRuJQGxItEu1zbM5UrkxBQUd3XsnDLlAtFMYJ_8irTdnkUCGh3bQKlBGU4KBbRWmx367Um60IFnfOx2Sy9phMe2Fi46DfK0uIlBxlAlFm0vPfHbUoy-C1fCap8pkoRzGws7-eMfc/s400/cookies+table.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Be careful not to brown the cookies--I did on the first batch of the blue ones which made them look a bit green around the bottoms.<br />
<br />
Find the recipe for <a href="http://www.midcenturymenu.com/2012/07/colorful-cookiesthe-third-place-best-winner-in-the-glistening-and-jiggly-contest/" target="_blank">Jello Cookies</a> on <a href="http://www.midcenturymenu.com/" target="_blank">Mid Century Menu</a>. <br />
<br />
I made a couple adjustments to the recipe as follows: <br />
<ul>
<li>Reduced the powdered sugar in the dough to 3/4 cup</li>
<li>Added 2 TBSP milk in dough to help it stick together</li>
<li>I found 9 minutes to be the perfect cooking time for my oven</li>
<li>For Cherry cookies- I swapped Almond Extract for Vanilla Extract in the glaze. </li>
</ul>
<br />
Enjoy!<br />
<br />
'Til we meet again,<br />

My family had no desire to visit Memphis but it was along our rail route, the train was stopping there anyway, Graceland was only a few miles away and with the promise of copious amounts of BBQ pork, they begrudgingly agreed to spend a few days.<br />

We decided we would walk the mile or so to our hotel as the weather was absolutely gorgeous. I was pleasantly surprised by all of the vintage neon signs we saw along the way. We arrived at our hotel around 7:30am and presented ourselves to the front desk. We were far from the 4pm standard check-in time. Lucky for us the manager was staffing the desk and not only offered us an early check-in but also upgraded our reservation to a 2 bedroom suite! Needless to say, if you are ever in Memphis, we highly recommend the <a href="http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/memri-residence-inn-memphis-downtown/" target="_blank">Memphis Downtown Residence Inn</a>.<br />

Wowsa! We headed over to Sun Records; The Birthplace of Rock N' Roll. This tiny studio is where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins started their careers. The tour was great! We couldn't believe how much music history was packed into such a small space.<br />
<br />
<br />
Trying to pack as much in as possible, we headed over to the Civil Rights Museum. The museum is housed in and built around the Lorraine Hotel where on April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated. It was so surreal to be in the parking lot looking up at the balcony at the exact place where he was shot. There was so much information and moving images in the museum. I regretted not getting the audio tour. It was far too much reading for the kids. I think they would have been more engaged if they were able to listen as we passed through the amazing exhibits.<br />

Early the next day we headed out to Graceland. Yes, Graceland was my main reason for wanting to go to Memphis. It was fantastic! Even Daddy-o was impressed with how well curated the collection was. Not only did we tour tour Elvis' home but also his jets, car museum and archives. The handsome devil duo had a good time as well. They are still talking about Graceland and one of them picked Elvis as their Halloween costume!<br />

We had built up a mighty big appetite learning all there was to know about The King. There are several restaurants at Graceland but we wanted to eat some 'real' Memphis cuisine. We had eaten so much BBQ pork leading up to this point we really just wanted some chicken. I turned to the Yelp app on my iPhone. Well hello <a href="http://unclelousfriedchicken.com/" target="_blank">Uncle Lou's</a>! Frankly, from the outside Uncles Lou's Fried Chicken doesn't look like much. The interior is pretty sparse as well but the place was packed with folks eating the BEST chicken I have ever tasted. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The chicken was fried with a light batter and then coated in a fantastic thin sweet, sour, spicy sauce. It was so good that we got a giant tray of it to take on the train the next day!<br />

We just returned from being on the road--or rather, on the rails. This year we thought we would try a different type of journey. We decided to step back in time and use trains as our main mode of transport. Unfortunately, we live in a portion of the country that no longer provides passenger train travel. No worries, I had a plan and yes it involved a car!<br />
<br />
We drove to Milwaukee to start our rail adventure. Milwaukee is approximately a six hour drive from our home. We chose to leave from Milwaukee over Chicago for two reasons 1) traffic driving into Chicago can often be a bear and 2) parking in Milwaukee is easy and much more affordable. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ5L-6Tq2nclnDcpaQ-_PF8IeCJESXTGvDCHEU8e5rVl0XQvBu8quLPXVogNH-6SHmPLC5GzJMcgQz1Hharien-jtXFPXrCtGoqnPZqODCpOVdpT4Iqg0pklHuEUj56D10GKNIib3z1Vo/s1600/train+station+Milwaukee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ5L-6Tq2nclnDcpaQ-_PF8IeCJESXTGvDCHEU8e5rVl0XQvBu8quLPXVogNH-6SHmPLC5GzJMcgQz1Hharien-jtXFPXrCtGoqnPZqODCpOVdpT4Iqg0pklHuEUj56D10GKNIib3z1Vo/s320/train+station+Milwaukee.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We boarded our commuter train and set off for Union Station in Chicago. The first thing my kids noticed was how spacious the seats were. The second was the power outlet which they were super excited about so that they could charge their iPods. Yep, there we go traveling vintage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My kids were stunned by the fact that were no seat belts and they could get up when they wanted. Overall the trip to Chicago was uneventful except for the fact that we got stuck behind a Metra train and ended up 40 minutes late into Chicago. We had to run to catch our train "The City of New Orleans". I'm sure it looked just like a scene out of a movie! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had planned our journey in two legs. Our first destination was Memphis, TN. The ride from Milwaukee to Memphis lasted approximately 13 hours, we boarded at 5:45p and arrived 6:45a. We reserved two roomettes to make our travels more comfortable. The roomette is designed to sleep two. During the day the roomette is set up as two seats facing one another with a fold out table between the two. By night, the two chairs folds down into a bed and an upper bunk folds down from the ceiling.</div>

It was 10 o'clock at night in our home time zone which was quite late to be eating but since meals were included with our ticket price we gave it a go. The food was large in quantity with the overall quality being pretty good. I was somewhat shocked to see the prices on the menu. Entrees hovered around $25. I had the herbed chicken.<br />

We retired to our little cabin directly after dinner. After all, we were due to arrive in Memphis at 6:45am. And off we went to sleep or at least we tried. We were in a car toward the front of the train and wow, do they sound the whistle--all night! I must say however, that on our return trip we were at the rear of the train and the horn was not an issue. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
My favorite car on the train had to be the lounge car. It was wide open with large windows, chairs, side tables and booths. We spent a lot of time in this car on our subsequent trips. We played Uno, built jigsaw puzzles and ate some really great food that we brought along from great restaurants.</div>

It was such a pleasure to be able to have fun with our kids for the entire trip! No worrying about getting lost. No dealing with the hassle of an airport. Yes, it took longer and ended up costing about as much as plane travel. But the trip itself was part of the vacation not just a nuisance that had to be dealt with before starting our vacation.</div>

It has been a long time, hasn't it? You may ask "Why Ms. Adventure, where have you been hiding?". Well the fact of the matter is I've been spending a lot of time with eight wheels strapped to my feet. Yes, that's affirmative we are starting a roller derby league right here in my little ole neck of the woods! That my friends, is folly for another post. Heck, folly for a entirely different blog!<br />
<br />
Today I spent the afternoon tending my garden. We tend to keep pretty cool up here on the shores of Superior and we are finally past our frost date. After an amazing amount of time spent mowing, trimming, feeding the bees, and generally tiding up the place looks pretty spiffy.<br />

<br />
There were pollinators galore in the chive blossoms. I really need to trim the chives back but the blooms provide so much for all of our six-legged friends, I just can't seem to do it. I think in another year the entire herb bed will be taken over by chives!<br />

Several years ago I planted sorrel in the garden. It is a perennial with wonderful tasting tangy citrus flavored leaves. I love to use it in salads and on sandwiches. It really packs a powerful flavor! It is a vigorous plant and is the first to sprout up in the spring. <br />

Heat a charcoal or gas grill. Brush the grill with oil.</div>
<br />
Brush both sides of the tuna with olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Cook the tuna over the hot coals for about 2 1/2 minutes on each side. Remove to a plate. The tuna should be seared on the outside and raw inside. Allow to cool and cut into cubes.<br />
<br />
(If you don't want to heat a grill, you can sear the tuna in a dry saute pan over high heat. Heat the pan for 2 minutes, add the tuna steaks and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on each side until seared on the outside and still raw inside.)<br />
<br />
For the dressing, whisk together 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the lime zest, lime juice, wasabi powder, soy sauce, hot sauce, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. Toss the avocado in the dressing and then add the tuna, red onion, scallion, and sesame seeds. Line the rolls with sorrel leaves, fill with the tuna mixture, and serve. ---from Barefoot Contessa.<br />

One of my many hobbies is beekeeping. And since I wanted to keep bees and knew others did as well, I thought it a good idea to start up a little beekeeping club. The club has since grown to include over 150 members! Who knew what we were in for when we set forth on this adventure?!<br />
<br />
Every year our club gets together and puts in a bee order. We get bees trucked in from California for new beekeepers to start hives or to replace hives lost during our harsh winters. This year has been our biggest order by far. We had nearly 100 packages of bees to dole out! By my estimation, that's over 1 million bees! All waiting patiently in my greenhouse for some lucky beekeeper.<br />

Keeping bees isn't all that hard. The bees know what to do and as the keepers our job is to make sure that the bees have what they need. Food in the early spring and sometimes in the fall too, a nice place for the queen to lay her eggs and a lovely spot for the workers to store their delicious honey. <br />

The weather is still cool here so there have typically only been three or four garage sales going on each weekend. Most weekends we have been coming home empty handed. But not last Saturday!<br />

A little cleaning, as well as some super glue to the area at the rear of the hood and she's good as new. It works like a charm! I think it was completely worth the $3 I shelled out for it.<br />

Simon was checking out some newly acquired lampshades. He's just so darn cute which is a good thing due to the fact that he is so ill behaved.<br />

It was sadly neglected after being painted entirely black years ago. It had been sitting in a local antique shop for quite a while. The owner was anxious to get rid of it and offered it to me for a song.<br />

You'll have to excuse my pictures. I am having a difficult time with finding a new photo editor! <br />
<br />
First, I cleaned the lamp really well and boy was it dirty! Next I applied spackle the chiped areas and sanded smooth after it had dried. A few quick coats of paint followed by some new wiring and voila!<br />

I love how sometimes the stars align to reveal hidden treasures. After a long trip home from Vegas, and I say long because our plane had mechanical issues and we spent many hours at the airport before finally being rebooked for the following day, we needed to drop my mother-in-law off at her work to finish her day. Only a short distance from her workplace we happened upon <a href="http://www.galaxy-drivein.com/" target="_blank">The Galaxy Drive-In</a>. As you may or may not know, I love Drive-in diners. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The food was good and the service was great! Daddy-o had the Chicago dog which he said rivaled the ones we've had in the windy city. The handsome devil duo went with chicken wings; one had the classic buffalo and the other had the pok pok asian style sauce. They thoroughly enjoyed both varieties! I elected to go with the standard chili dog. The chili was homemade and the dog was quality. Each meal is served basket style including french fries and a drink.<br />

Dogs are welcome and family fun is encouraged. There is a vintage juke box on site, as well as many vintage style pedal cars hanging from the awning. Definitely worth a second, third and fourth visit!<br />

An occasional bald eagle, roadkill porcupine, the rare restored vintage Chris Craft and yes, of course, The Turks Inn. To say that I am intrigued is an understatement. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It's kitschy fantasticness is easy to spot from the highway. What strikes me odd is the location. When coming from the U.P., one must pass through miles and miles of remote forest. Then, out of nowhere is a large KOA campground in the middle of a pine stand. I find that unique as I would never like to camp in the middle of pine needles and pitch. It even has a pool with a grand water slide! Only a few hundred feet more and you come to The Turks Inn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Look at that roof line! I am convinced that wonderful adventures lie beyond that door! Unfortunately, they are still following their winter hours, which is Saturday starting at 5pm. We were there on a Tuesday afternoon. Schucks!<br />
<br />
I did find some limited <a href="http://www.spiderlakelodge.com/SLL-Pages/turks.html" target="_blank">information</a> on the internet. It was built in 1934 and sits several miles outside of Hayward, Wisconsin. It was apparently quite the place in it's heyday! I was lucky enough to find some interior pictures. Oh, I can't wait to have supper there! And maybe a few drinks too! How's this for a blast from the past...No credit cards accepted. They do, however, take personal checks.<br />

Yep, that's right, I was having a full blown conversation on my cell phone in the middle of the local Goodwill store. In my defense, I was gabbing with my best friend, who I speak with far too infrequently. And, frankly, she has some pretty exciting things going on in her life right now!<br />
<br />
So, I am being a generally bad person...yack, yack, yack...scanning the aisles...yack, yack, yack...I spy a cute little pair of 50's Asian figurines....yack, yack, yack...I notice the boy's hat is broken...yack, yack, yack...I discuss with my friend that even though the boy is broken, I will buy them anyway...yack,yack yack...I am juggling my purchases, my purse and, of course, my cell phone...yack, yack, yack...I round the corner...yack, yack, yack...and....<br />

I picked these chalkware plaques up a few weeks ago. They had some paint loss and scratches to the paint but I love the black and white ovals, as well as, the texture of the figures. I always struggle with how much to restore. I don't want them to look new but rather to keep some of their vintage charm. I decided to leave the cream/white as is-just cleaned up.<br />

Here they are all cleaned up with the black and aqua repainted. I love the Valspar testers that Lowe's sells! They will mix any color and they are only like $2 each. The only drawback is the testers only come in a satin finish. If you need a semi or high gloss then you need to get at least a quart.<br />

I am very happy with the end result!<br />

I know it seems like I may have a problem but I swear it's under control. It certainly makes me happy to find my little treasures and let's face it, there are certainly worse things I could be doing.<br />
<br />
I couldn't help myself and made the trip back out to the middle of nowhere last Wednesday. I had spied a few things that I would like on my previous trip so Daddy-o and I headed out. I figure life is short, why not shell out a little cash. You can't take it with you, right?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifwHNsxh-ddX2wgsoUeP8Z90J8I0rNALocgI4wjIO2_-v5RCOjlzzzjN5t-mtBo8srQE3m9TzsMGm9i_WV3OjThR7p9mNxODZtOi3gpz0rvVzuOm5fcNp0kYnqLBwaqq8XMRLWl6xHr_A/s1600/102_2053_resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifwHNsxh-ddX2wgsoUeP8Z90J8I0rNALocgI4wjIO2_-v5RCOjlzzzjN5t-mtBo8srQE3m9TzsMGm9i_WV3OjThR7p9mNxODZtOi3gpz0rvVzuOm5fcNp0kYnqLBwaqq8XMRLWl6xHr_A/s320/102_2053_resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A cute little set of chalkware wall hangings.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>I picked up this set of wall hangings with the intention of repairing the damage to the musical notes. On closer inspection, I don't think this is a set at all. The finish on the notes seems to be different than on the "Harp". The central portion is marked "1952 Gary Art Studio". There are no markings on any of the other pieces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRguxlRS9qF3k1imNAekOh6QFwn6wchLOksqj5IHlJrbswVa_VZVrIv_j3vmgy2n8faHFJx_FtNCr0ozZPoKHfdkTNqpFpNYs78EKVkYJjHCXm9IPZK8qBRYY6U942rQQQ9QLHaSmlLm4/s1600/102_2057_resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRguxlRS9qF3k1imNAekOh6QFwn6wchLOksqj5IHlJrbswVa_VZVrIv_j3vmgy2n8faHFJx_FtNCr0ozZPoKHfdkTNqpFpNYs78EKVkYJjHCXm9IPZK8qBRYY6U942rQQQ9QLHaSmlLm4/s320/102_2057_resized.jpg" width="240" /></a></div> The musical notes had several cracks in the neck and were fairly unstable.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2qXRF6MCgOx8VPyoRJqgslHuVAGtHJeg8j1K7PNtzhj99PVBwvzbUPOiLXvsPUCsZSK2C9T7f4ehPlWXE11fjYLvl5QP9mxZE8VPKjlKaHddaqcactF5owBca0aWWrlE7DzEw9xCQF7g/s1600/102_2060_resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2qXRF6MCgOx8VPyoRJqgslHuVAGtHJeg8j1K7PNtzhj99PVBwvzbUPOiLXvsPUCsZSK2C9T7f4ehPlWXE11fjYLvl5QP9mxZE8VPKjlKaHddaqcactF5owBca0aWWrlE7DzEw9xCQF7g/s320/102_2060_resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I first used superglue in the cracks followed by spackle. Once the spackle was dry I sanded the repair smooth. A nice coat of paint and voila!<br />
<br />
I chose to touch up the figures as well. The color had been sprayed on and was pretty sloppy. I left the faces of the figures untouched because I liked the rosy cheeks. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdJx_AHitzCZz9dzd66f4b-ALQBht7cq4w6rlzF_blgfm4tp4RNTMGO95w8xw-9U1w402KIYfbRkxDathxjhU3GOLy3rCwsoIZUTI329pqDrjXdAp3SN7S4ZwEGK5ZbQy86F7cwtoEhrg/s1600/102_2065_resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdJx_AHitzCZz9dzd66f4b-ALQBht7cq4w6rlzF_blgfm4tp4RNTMGO95w8xw-9U1w402KIYfbRkxDathxjhU3GOLy3rCwsoIZUTI329pqDrjXdAp3SN7S4ZwEGK5ZbQy86F7cwtoEhrg/s400/102_2065_resized.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I think they look darling! The colors really pop, yet the faces retain their cherubic quality. I love the crispness of the gold paint. I tried several varieties but found that model paint worked the best.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

A great little 3 oz belt buckle flask! Who was the brilliant chap that came up with this idea? <br />
<br />
The flask is held securely in the belt buckle with two small magnets. The hand of cards seems fitting given the locale of the event. They did have some other designs as well but this was the best for us. I thought they are so awesome and a pretty good price that I bought a couple.<br />
<br />
The owner of the store was kind enough to special order exactly what I wanted! Check them out on Facebook <a href="http://www.facebook.com/CheBelloBoutique">http://www.facebook.com/CheBelloBoutique</a><br />

Shhhhhh....don't tell her. It's a surprise. I was pleasantly surprised to come across this photo<br />

Surely it's not because of the lamp. If I had to guess, I would say that my father or one of my uncles had just done something truely inappropriate!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I have been desperately trying to cut down on the amount of time I spend at my job. My plan for today was to get my oil changed, clean my car, get equipment ready for a beekeeping class I am doing tomorrow, go to the bank, etc, etc... <br />
<br />
Well, while waiting to get my oil changed I realized it was indeed Wednesday, a fact I knew but had not had the "Aha! It's Wednesday!" moment yet. What's so special about Wednesday you ask? My friend Samantha (read her blog <a href="http://samanthaelizabeths.blogspot.com/">here</a>) and I have been trying to go to this antique store in the middle of nowhere all winter. Their winter hours are Wednesday 11a-1p. Hello, two hours in the middle of the week?? Needless to say, when I realized it was Wednesday it was 10:40am and I just had to start my trek. The store is about 40 minutes from where I was. I immediately texted Samantha. She texted back something about working. What?! So I did what any good friend would do. I went without her.<br />
<br />
The store is not heated and actually occupies two buildings, the old bank and an old 7-Up distributor. The town it is in most likely has a population somewhere around 400-700 people. I didn't find too much in the old bank so I headed next door to the soda garage. <br />
<br />
I spotted what would become Daddy-O's birthday gift. Even though his birthday isn't until June, I just had to buy it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqcwO7ZUNZd9he7qDfC0QM-nMKD9eL2O5OgWX0G5u4waP6mEWxUATcVislubmrsrEwbghhyphenhypheneqVQ7H0rGDL-FnywmZpwkwVgxEi36jXQtuR7ZZ_f_hopHLNVh7v42xHWxrNRMeQ6Vb7G1Q/s1600/midglobe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqcwO7ZUNZd9he7qDfC0QM-nMKD9eL2O5OgWX0G5u4waP6mEWxUATcVislubmrsrEwbghhyphenhypheneqVQ7H0rGDL-FnywmZpwkwVgxEi36jXQtuR7ZZ_f_hopHLNVh7v42xHWxrNRMeQ6Vb7G1Q/s400/midglobe.jpg" width="265" /></a>Daddy -O has always wanted a floor globe. This one is fantastic with its smart mid century design. It lights up too! Bonus! Because as I will fully admit, I have a lamp addiction. The only major flaw is a crack that runs through Africa. My plan is to try to glue it from the inside to stabilize it. I may try to apply some touch up paint to the exterior to minimize the crack. It's really only noticeable when the light is on.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div> The soda garage is two floors, so after careful inspection of the items on the lower level, I headed upstairs. There were no lights in the garage but many windows including a large (6ftX5ft) opening in the side wall that has no glass. It is literally open to the elements! The upper floor is somewhat "L" shaped. When I came around the corner and nearly fell over. This is what I saw...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-nJD8E8vBf3UnPx6DaM-Errl38SxwPiOEmZcLP8aKYE1gJVdEAS3wHVhalhCQG0QYY_DdDRDgrIszm3sQwkirxpa6GeLMxP-kzv_FgRaeagaXsF_dLAwOmrFP417OYM6ALcNitfAxhN8/s1600/reglorpurppair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-nJD8E8vBf3UnPx6DaM-Errl38SxwPiOEmZcLP8aKYE1gJVdEAS3wHVhalhCQG0QYY_DdDRDgrIszm3sQwkirxpa6GeLMxP-kzv_FgRaeagaXsF_dLAwOmrFP417OYM6ALcNitfAxhN8/s400/reglorpurppair.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The proprietor of the store was right behind me and I think I did a very good job of containing my enthusiasm. I said flatly, "Wow. Those are big AND purple". He immediately dropped the price by 30%. He said he was told by the dealer he got them from that they would be "hot" in Chicago. Well, the upper peninsula of Michigan is a long way from Chicago and they have been sitting there for what sounds like several years. In an unheated garage, unprotected, 20 feet from the outside world.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The lamps were made by Reglor in 1953.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I just brought them home and plugged them in. I haven't cleaned them yet. Boy are they dusty! They are very large measuring 35" from base to finial. The shades measure 22.5" at their widest point.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There is a small chip in the bottom of the male lamp and two small areas of paint loss. The female lamp has a small hole under her left arm. The dark purple paint on the faces is cracking and needs repainting. The shades have some small spots on the underside but otherwise are in fantastic condition. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I hope I can do as nice a job as <a href="http://hepcatrestorations.com/">Hepcat.</a> He has restored some fabulous finds and is kind enough to detail his work in his blog. Thanks Hepcat! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

What's your name?With our trip to Vegas fast approaching, Daddy-O made a few new shirt purchases. He tends to gravitate toward Hawaiian and bowling shirts. Although we love vintage shirts, they tend to be difficult to come by in the proper size and the price can be downright frightening!<br />
<br />
One of his favorite shopping spots is <a href="http://www.daddyos.com/" target="_blank">Daddy-O's</a> (no relation, of course)! Here are some favorites from his collection.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUze5HphQFtCxcpm2ImYoQTOag_MOEZqcODMP1IKH9YCXhipE11L4GfQ63HjQA0e-NmV91_vsEwFdCxE3JghLN-QJQ69pGQy2HAefHNPWX3IpRlCVDj9MFVCrn3B_pRaA-BZIoycb2XkA/s1600/SUN+rec.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUze5HphQFtCxcpm2ImYoQTOag_MOEZqcODMP1IKH9YCXhipE11L4GfQ63HjQA0e-NmV91_vsEwFdCxE3JghLN-QJQ69pGQy2HAefHNPWX3IpRlCVDj9MFVCrn3B_pRaA-BZIoycb2XkA/s1600/SUN+rec.jpg" /></a>This shirt celebrates the iconic Sun Records Company. This is where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison got their start. Read more about the history of Sun Records <a href="http://www.sunrecords.com/">here.</a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmnt9eGhcs6-7bpZOmF51H_AenMnstvMMf0jV_fKcWFOH40X6HonPkEcXX4zAlcpU92xgHIyFIJfGeItICQoOaP2slHPPGl1pf95hqalGTdSVMq8jnVcEUFrotgDaD9IOCflvJZzHLirQ/s1600/Satellite.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmnt9eGhcs6-7bpZOmF51H_AenMnstvMMf0jV_fKcWFOH40X6HonPkEcXX4zAlcpU92xgHIyFIJfGeItICQoOaP2slHPPGl1pf95hqalGTdSVMq8jnVcEUFrotgDaD9IOCflvJZzHLirQ/s1600/Satellite.jpg" /></a></div> A classic bowling shirt and the only one in Daddy-O's collection that has his true name on it! You may not know this, but we are total bowling geeks. I think it may have something to do with really long winters here. You would think we would be much better at it but we are just there to have fun. <br />

The best thing about this shirt, besides being my favorite color, it that the print panels are fuzzy! Just like a plush toy...there is just something a little wrong with that. How many beanie babies gave their lives to make that shirt!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<a href="http://www.vivalasvegas.net/">Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender</a>. While in Vegas, we will be making our way over to the <a href="http://www.neonmuseum.org/">Neon Museum</a>. I am super-excited to see all of the retired neon signs! I have always been drawn to great old signs.<br />
<br />
